How to do well in college?

By Judith Mixon at 2015-10-09 08:23:04
Ok, so after the issue of submitting documents and taking entrance exams is done and you’re lucky possessor of welcome letter to the college of your dreams, a natural question of “What is next?!” pops up in your mind. Do not worry, my dear friend, in this article you will find 4 advices that will help you to get good grades and make your college life productive.

1. Create an image of your perfect education result

Once you got an acceptance letter from your college, imagine the best outcome of your study. Express it, based on the reason why you are here. You may write an essay, put a list of your personal expectations, or draw a picture – the important thing is to imagine and define what you want to get at the end of your study. Visualization allows us to notice our mistakes before doing them. If you do not see a clear image of what you want, it is more likely that you will not get it at the end. Work on your visualization until it inspires you. Of course, the real life will be different from your expectations. The purpose of the visualization is not to give predictions or restrict your will in making future decisions but to give you clear awareness and be a navigation star in the swamp of doubts.

2. Take at least one additional subject each term

Students are told that the full schedule should consist of 3-5 subjects and have 12-14 lessons a term. But frankly speaking it is hard to call such low effective schedule “full”. Average person works about 40 hours per week while students are happy to spend extra day for leisure, not to mention summer and winter vacations. So if you are going to stay at college for 4 or more years and your purpose is to get a good grades diploma, make sure to make most out of it. Find subjects that are important for your future profession and attend extra classes. Pay the utmost attention to you English essay writing and paperworks, it adds most to your final grades. Moreover, if you are able to complete the course within less time than needed – do it! The real profit of earlier graduation is not in the saving time but that you can enjoy more knowledge, more friends and more achievements. In addition, the employee will rather get interested in such productive student.

3. Sort out the «waste»

Decide what you want to get from each subject. Do you have a desire to study it? Or your purpose is just getting a“pass” mark and forget about it? Is this subject a major for you, but you have no interest in studying it?
You don’t need to make hard efforts on each and every subject. Work most on those subjects that are important for your future profession and take a little of rest at those of low priority. For example, if you’re a student of technical college, you should study hard on science and technical subjects, but get some help at English essay writing or other humanities.

Sometimes teachers give home assignments and other tasks that seems to be not worth the efforts. You might skip the task you think is not important and use this time for doing something more needed. But teachers are not responsible for the experience you get while studying, so it is completely your decision to do it or not. But make sure to consider the consequences of your actions.

4. Study the material from the first try

One of the worst time killers during the study is the reexamination of what you did not understand or understood badly the last time. When student say they are studying, they often mean they are filling gaps in what they’ve learned before. Careless study of what you were supposed to learn day after day is a serious mistake. Do not try to understand the new material, without understanding the basics, as going back and learning "the basics" of the object again, will be much more time-consuming in the future. Ideally, you will not need to study outside the classroom, at least regarding the material you have already studied. You will be able to revise old information within couple of hours, without spending extra time and efforts on re-examining what you’re studied just a month ago.

You don't have to put hard efforts on every single subject. Work most regarding those matters that are significant for your future calling and take a tad bit of rest at those of low need. Read More
